The Morning Club - wake up, get shit done, rule the world

I am time poor. There are simply not enough hours in the day.  The only way I can get things done is by staying up late and dragging myself through my ‘to do’ list until stupid o’clock or by waking up at the crack of dawn.  I feel as though am neither a lark or an owl, something has to give.  Do you ever feel like this? Well guys, it is time for me to change my focus because after much reading and researching, it is clear success and waking up early is synonymous.

Across the country, hundreds of hugely successful women are rising at 5am. Leadership expert Robin Sharma, whose clients include NASA, Microsoft and Nike says “the golden hours are between 5-8am. This is when the high achievers set up their days for success. These are the hour of least distraction and when your energy is at its peak.”  There are a plethora of studies that support this notion. Behavioural scientist Professor Dan Airely encourages us to “take advantage of the fact that we’re mentally sharper in the mornings”. Needless to say my routine of attempting to wake up at 5am, snoozing until 5.50am, then racing around like a lunatic, completing a hectic day of work, doing home routine, then heading back to my desk, sitting, hunched over my laptop or hunched over a pile of marking is senseless. I am definitely taking steps to remedy this ASAP.

Step 1

For me, moving forward, my evenings are going to be for unwinding.  Seriously there are not enough hours in the evening to do everything that I want to do and I often end up going to bed at 1am. After cooking dinner, play time with my mini, dinner, bath time, story time then the battle that is bedtime – I’m normally shattered but I often plough on. Not anymore. I always wake up relatively early but I seldom have a productive morning, this will soon change.

Step 2

In a bid to launch my productive mornings, I will definitely write my ‘to do’ list every night. Then I can wake up with purpose, direction and just get started.

Step 3

I plan to use my early start to do something that requires brain power. Checking emails can wait until 8.15 when I’m at my desk.  I want that satisfying feeling of achieving something before most people wake up.

We may be time poor, we know there are not enough hours in the day, but let’s think smart and use our time wisely.  If you're current routine isn't working, why not try a new routine? Hundreds of successful people are waking up early and kicking ass, I'm signing up to that club.

Feel free to share your morning routine and let me know whether you're joining The Morning Club.
